The attack that left Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico “between life and death” this Wednesday is yet another in a string of others that have left political leaders injured or even killed in recent years.
Here are some more recent cases of attacks on politicians:
Shinzo Abe, 2022
On July 8, 2022, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed during an election rally in Nara (west). Shot twice in the neck, he was pronounced dead several hours later.
His alleged killer, arrested shortly after the event, justified it with his alleged ties to the Unification Church, nicknamed the “Moon Sect”, accused of exerting heavy financial pressure on its followers in Japan.
Heir to a political dynasty, Abe served as prime minister from 2006–2007 and again from 2012–2020.
Christina Kirchner, 2022
On September 1, 2022, a man pointed a gun at the head of then-Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner as she met with supporters outside her home in Buenos Aires, but the gun did not fire.
The attacker, who is currently in custody, said the attack was caused by “the situation in the country.”
The pro-Kirchner camp, for its part, defends the theory of broader orchestration and the existence of instigators.
Cristina Kirchner, the former president (2007–2015) sentenced at the end of 2022 to six years in prison and disqualification on charges of fraud and corruption, spoke of private financing of an attack “linked to the government” of her predecessor, liberal Mauricio Macri (2015–2015). 2019).
Imran Khan, 2022
In November that year, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot in the leg when the truck he was traveling in crossed a busy street in Wazirabad (East).
In a “confession” video released by police, the shooter said he acted because he believed Imran Khan was against Islam.
Jovenel Moise, 2021
Haitian President Jovenel Moise was shot dead in the middle of the night on July 7, 2021, at his private residence in Port-au-Prince by a 28-man armed commando posing as agents of the North American drug enforcement agency.
Three attackers were killed and about 20 people, including 18 former Colombian soldiers, were detained. A US investigation has revealed that two men who ran a security company in Miami planned to kidnap Jovenel Moise and replace him with a Haitian-American.
Jair Bolsonaro, 2018
Jair Bolsonaro, former far-right president of Brazil (2019-2022), was stabbed in the stomach by a man with mental health problems in September 2018 and seriously injured during a mass scene in Minas Gerais (southeast), during election campaign that will bring him to the presidency.
Since then, several operations have been carried out here to eliminate the consequences of the attack.
In 2023, he was declared ineligible until 2030 for defamation without any evidence of the reliability of the electronic voting system used in the 2022 presidential election, in which he was defeated by Lula da Silva.
