The volume of South African citrus exports to Russia in 2022 exceeded the volumes of the previous three years, Fruitnet, an agricultural news and agriculture information portal, reports on February 6.
According to information provided by the South African Citrus Growers Association (CGA), last season was very difficult for South African exporters, with growers’ profits falling sharply. The organization reported that between 8% and 10% of South African citrus was exported to Russia as of February 2022.
At the same time, contrary to the fears of South African analysts, the volume of exports to Russia did not decrease. In addition, in 2022 exports exceeded the volumes of the previous three years: 174,337 tons were shipped to Russia, compared to 160,000 tons in 2021.
The CGA said production of Valencian oranges and grapefruits fell, but the decline in their exports was more than offset by increases in the supply of mandarins, navel oranges and lemons. However, CGA experts emphasize that to export to the country [РФ] it was very difficult”: “During the start of the season, delivery options were limited as sanctions affected trade flows”. The cost of shipping to Russia also increased significantly, resulting in low profit for the manufacturer in this market.
