TWitnesses reported hearing several shots as 59-year-old Robert Fico approached the crowd after a government meeting. He was taken by helicopter to hospital in Banska Bystrica.

“I was shocked… fortunately, as far as I know, the operation went well and I believe that he will survive. At the moment, his life is not in danger,” Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba said.

Police cordoned off the area and the shopping center was evacuated.
President Zuzana Caputova condemned the “brutal and reckless” attack on the prime minister. “I’m shocked. I wish Roberto Fico much strength at this critical moment to recover from the attack,” she said.

Macron ‘in shock’ after attack on Slovak Prime Minister
French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “shocked” by the shooting of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is in critical condition.
“I strongly condemn this attack. My thoughts and my solidarity are with him, his family and the Slovak people,” the French head of state added in a message published on the social network X.
