The European Commission has invested more than one billion euros in 54 defense industrial projects under the European Defense Fund to strengthen technological capabilities in critical areas, it was announced this Thursday.
In a statement, the community leader announced that it had invested just over one billion euros in 54 “joint defense research and development projects.”
Of the total, 30 projects are for research and will be funded with €265 million, while the remaining 24 projects aim to improve Europe’s defense capabilities by €766 million.
“The selected projects will aim to support technological excellence in critical areas including cyber defense, land, air and sea combat, space asset protection or chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defence,” said chief executive Ursula von der Leyen.
The Commission hopes that these 54 approved projects, which will receive funding under the European Defense Fund, will be able to “contribute to the European Union’s capability priorities” in defense while creating an environment of cooperation.
And he illustrated this with two projects, MARTE and FMBTech, which bring together more than 70 industrial and research organizations to design and build combat vehicle systems that will be used throughout Europe.
In total, the European Commission received 236 proposals from various consortia, from 581 organizations from 26 member states of the Union, “with the involvement of small and medium-sized companies.”
