The European Commission announced this Thursday that it had opened formal proceedings against the North American technology company Meta as it was “concerned” about alleged violations of the protection of minors rules on Facebook and Instagram for encouraging behavioral addiction.
In its statement, the community leader indicates that it has “initiated a formal process to assess whether Meta, a provider of Facebook and Instagram, may have violated the Digital Services Act in areas related to the protection of minors.”
“The Commission is concerned that the systems of Facebook and Instagram, including their algorithms, may encourage behavioral addictions in children, as well as create so-called “rabbit hole” effects. In addition, the Commission is equally concerned about age verification and verification methods. implemented by Meta,” the institution adds in a note.
