Turkey needs unity and solidarity to overcome the difficult days when a strong earthquake struck the southern provinces of the country, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the headquarters of the Emergency and Disaster Management Authority (AFAD), reported Hürriyet Daily News on February 6.
He expressed his hope that Turkey “leave behind these disastrous days in unity and solidarity” and added that “Today is the day we became one heart for 85 million”.
Erdogan also noted that the country was rocked by the biggest disaster it has experienced in a century, since the Erzincan earthquake in 1939.
Saying that Turkey has started to request international assistance, the Turkish leader noted that in addition to NATO and the European Union, 45 other countries have also offered assistance.
“I wish God’s mercy to our citizens who died in this disaster, and a speedy recovery to our injured”– he said.
It should be noted that Erdogan’s main ally, Nationalist Movement Party Chairman Devlet Bahceli, sent a delegation consisting of members of the Presidential Council and deputies to the earthquake zone to investigate.
