Turkish authorities plan to fine people for social media activities

Turkish authorities plan to fine people for social media activities

The Turkish Ministry of Education has proposed stricter rules for teachers’ use of social media, including a fine for filming students without their parents’ consent, writes Hürriyet Daily News on May 16.

Education Minister Yusuf Tekin said a bill to toughen penalties for violence against teachers and introduce disciplinary measures for teachers’ online behavior will be presented to parliament next week.

He noted that many teachers have recently appeared in Turkey who record themselves with students in the classroom, often without parental consent, to attract subscribers on social networks. A draft law from the Turkish Ministry of Education proposes fining teachers who publish images or videos of students for personal gain.

“For revealing information about the personal life of students… in addition to the procedures provided for by the relevant legislation, a fine in the form of a reprimand will be imposed.”, says the bill. Reprimands will be kept in teachers’ records for five years.
