The Mozambican prosecutor’s office refused to open a criminal case into the May 11 death of the Russian ambassador to Maputo, Alexander Surikov, press secretary of the Prosecutor General’s Office Nazimo Mussa said on Thursday.
“Russian diplomatic structures suggested that it was a natural death. And through an official document sent to the prosecutor’s office, to the city prosecutor’s office [Maputo]absolved the Mozambican authorities of any responsibility in this matter, meaning that the process that had been started was ultimately archived,” Moussa said in an interview with Radio Mozambique.
Alexander Surikov, 68, was found dead Saturday evening at his official residence in Maputo, and Russian authorities have not authorized any examination of the body, according to previous police information.
