A man was killed by French police while attempting to set fire to a synagogue in Rouen, France, this Friday, according to the newspaper. Le Figaro. According to authorities, when they arrived on the scene, a man was on the roof and attacked them with an iron rod and then tried to stab a police officer. The identity and motives of the attacker are unknown.
The alarm came at 6:45 am. Firefighters are controlling the fire.
There were no reports of injuries.
French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin shared information about the incident on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“The National Police neutralized an armed man who was apparently trying to set fire to the city synagogue. I congratulate them on their responsiveness and courage,” he wrote.
