Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro said on Monday that Portugal was ready to send 140 people to help fight the fires in Chile, and recalled that the country stood by Portugal at the “critical height of the fires”.
Speaking to reporters, José Luis Carneiro explained that Portugal had already informed the European Union’s Civil Protection Mechanism of “the availability of funds to support the fires occurring in Chile.” The Minister stressed that Portugal is awaiting permission from the Chilean authorities to send operatives to the country.
Fires in Chile have claimed the lives of at least 24 people and injured about 1,000.
José Luis Carneiro also expressed his readiness to join the support group for the rescue of victims of the earthquake that occurred this morning with an epicenter in Turkey and hit areas of Syria.
“So far, 11 countries have already mobilized funds to support Turkey under the European Civil Protection Mechanism. in a medical emergency,” he said.
