29-year-old woman allowed to die after unbearable mental illness

A 29-year-old woman was allowed to undergo medically assisted euthanasia in the Netherlands because she suffered from an unbearable mental illness. “At my home, the doctors will give me a sedative and then medicine to stop my heart. It will be like falling asleep,” Zoraya Ter Beek told British newspaper The Guardian. According to the law, passed in 2001, the first in the world, to be eligible for euthanasia, one must endure “intolerable suffering with no prospect of improvement.”

Zoraya suffered from chronic depression, anxiety, trauma and an unspecified personality disorder since childhood. She was also diagnosed with autism. When he met his partner, he believed he could recover, but the self-inflicted injuries and suicidal thoughts continued. After ten years of intensive treatment and 30 sessions of electroconvulsive therapy, Zoraya decided to die in December 2020.

The permit comes after three and a half years. “I feel relieved. It was such a long struggle,” he said, recalling that when his story became public, he was told: “You should burn in hell” or “don’t do this, your life is precious.” Cases of euthanasia due to mental illness are always controversial and are on the rise. There were only two in 2010, but last year there were 138, for a total of 9,068 deaths by euthanasia.
