Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo called the host of a local radio program in Flanders and called for him to be attacked, as well as the head of the Slovak government, Robert Fico.
“He realized that he had endangered me, as well as my wife and children, and he apologized,” De Croo told Sudinfo newspaper, as quoted by Spanish news agency EFE.
A Waregem station journalist was immediately suspended after he joked live on air about the attempted murder of Robert Fico and the possibility of something similar in Belgium.
“It looks like they are going to save the man,” the presenter said of Fico.
“The criminal has already been arrested. To all those who are thinking about assassinating Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, but don’t dare because of the security surrounding him: you see that it is possible. I would say ‘be decisive’,” he added.
De Croo filed a complaint, but also called the station.
“I called him yesterday [quinta-feira] on their own initiative. He understands that he has crossed the line,” said the head of the Belgian government, who considered freedom of speech sacred, but “calls for violence are punishable.”
Robert Fico was shot several times on Wednesday as he left a government meeting in the town of Handlova, a 71-year-old man who justified the attack by saying he did not like government policies.
Although Fico, 59, remains in a serious condition, he is stable, conscious and able to communicate, Slovakia’s president-elect Peter Pellegrini said today.
