The European Union (EU) decided on Friday to ban four more Russian media outlets from broadcasting across the 27-nation bloc, accusing them of spreading propaganda about the invasion of Ukraine and disinformation targeting upcoming European elections.
We are talking about the media outlets Voice of Europe, RIA Novosti, Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta, which are accused of being under the control of the Kremlin.
In its statement, the Council of the European Union accused the media outlets of attacking “European political parties, especially during election periods.”
Belgium last month launched an investigation into alleged Russian interference in the June European elections, adding that the country’s intelligence services had confirmed the existence of a network that sought to undermine support for Ukraine.
The Czech government, for its part, imposed sanctions on several individuals after a pro-Russian influence operation was exposed.
Since the war caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the EU has already suspended Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as other media outlets.
