France has blocked the social network Tik Tok in New Caledonia. This is an unprecedented measure and one of the latest decisions to curb the spread of violence that has been felt in the archipelago since the beginning of the week.
Looting, arson, injury and death are just some of the brutal situations that Caledonians have witnessed. The archipelago has been under a state of emergency since Thursday, and Paris has already begun to implement some security measures. However, the question arises why the Chinese application was blocked.
Critics accuse the social network of spreading misinformation, collecting sensitive data and stoking social unrest, especially in countries that do not comply with China’s policies. An example of this is the United States, which is even considering the possibility of a complete ban on its use.
However, in Paris it is believed that opponents of the French regime used the application to communicate and organize demonstrations.
The ban on the social network became possible only due to the state of emergency. Because this is a temporary measure, it allows French authorities to restrict certain public freedoms in response to a serious situation.
