Christian Brückner, the main suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Praia da Luz, Portugal, complained to the court this Friday that prison food is making him fat because it is “high in calories”, according to Mirror. Adding to this complaint is another: Brückner doesn’t take hot baths.
“My client has not taken a hot shower or eaten a hot meal for three days. This is unacceptable. He is fed high-calorie foods. This is a huge portion of calories. And he is forced to take a cold shower. We demand that you be given a hot meal when you come here and allowed to take a hot shower,” said lawyer Philip Markworth.
“He took his last hot shower on Tuesday morning. And as for food, when he is here all he gets is eight slices of the cheapest toasted bread and a piece of cheap cheese. This is what prison gives him. You can eat here. Yesterday, when he arrived, they only gave him two packages of turkey sausage and no bread,” he added.
The 48-year-old suspect is accused of rape and sexual assault. While the hearing continues, he is being held in a local prison in Sende, Germany, as the trial is 200 miles away from the Oldenburg prison where he is serving a seven-year sentence for raping a 72-year-old American tourist. In light of the complaints, the judge promised to question prison governors.
Earlier this week, Irish woman Hazel Behan told a court that a German man raped her at home in the Algarve in June 2004. Hazel says she has no doubt that Bruckner is the rapist. The suspect’s blue eyes, she said, leave no room for doubt. On the day of the crime, the rapist was wearing black tights, a black tracksuit and a mask that hid his face.
“I believe this man is my attacker. I knew his eyes, I know his eyes,” he added. “I see blue eyes every day. My son has blue eyes. I know the difference. When you spend time in such a situation and you see nothing more about this person except his eyes, that’s the only thing you need to remember,” the victim said in court.
Hazel also said that when she reported the crime to Portuguese police, she was called a “jerk”.
Christian Brückner denies three rapes and sexual assaults he is accused of in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
