A controversial campaign poster against child sexual abuse has been removed from Almeria, Spain, after it was deemed inappropriate. According to the newspaper El EspanolBoth political parties and residents were outraged by the message conveyed, which stated that sexual relations with children could take place with consent.
“If you said no, then this is not sex, this is aggression,” we read on the poster. There were even those who even classified the poster as a “pedophile,” justifying this by the fact that sex with a child is always a crime, regardless of whether the minor says “yes” or “no.”
“Unacceptable”: parties against the campaign
“A child should be inviolable, whether he says “yes” or “no”. If he says “no”, this is aggression; if he says “yes,” this is also aggression,” the Golos party said.
A PSOE spokeswoman called the campaign “unacceptable” and asked Mayor Maria del Mar Vázquez to explain who authorized the posters to be displayed in the city.
The poster also had an impact on the national level. The Ministry of Equality commented on the situation, calling for the posters to be removed immediately. “The campaign is directed against children and cannot be funded by the State Pact against Gender-Based Violence,” the general note reads.
Campaign failure
The City Council of Almeria explained the situation as a mistake in the campaign against gender-based violence with several models of posters and assured that it had removed those that were similar to the one criticized.
According to the municipality, the poster was one of the models presented by the agency responsible for the campaign and was mistakenly printed and installed in the city.
“We share the disgust caused by one of the campaign images against sexual violence. The advertisement, which has now been withdrawn, was shown in error without prior control. We apologize and reaffirm our commitment to the safety and security of minors,” the city council added on social network X (formerly Twitter).
