Temporary cities for displaced people in Rio Grande do Sul

The regional government of Rio Grande do Sul, a Brazilian state devastated by rains since late April, will create four “temporary cities” to accommodate thousands of displaced people. Temporary shelters will be built in sports and cultural complexes in the cities of Porto Alegre, Canoas, San Leopoldo and Guaíba, which will be adapted to receive and accommodate people for a longer period of time, since the government estimates that during the month the number of people who will still need housing will be about 10 thousand, and many of them will be forced to stay in shelters longer. There are currently more than 78,000 people in public shelters. In some areas of Porto Alegre, floodwaters have begun to recede, but many residents remain isolated, with the army the only help for many. However, the forecast for the next few days calls for a new cold front to hit southern Brazil, accompanied by rain that could impact rescue efforts. Although water levels are falling in some areas, there are concerns about possible illnesses, as there are dead animals, streets littered with rubbish, and houses that have been left in ruins will have to be removed.
