The ICCN, which manages Virunga Park, condemned “this cowardly crime” and denounced the “renewed attacks on forest guards” in recent months in the reserve.
Around Christmas, two guards were killed in an attack similar to what happened on Monday.
Mai-Mai are members of self-defence groups, usually formed on a community basis, and have been present in the Kivu region for at least three decades.
Virunga Park is about 300 km long, with an average width of 23 km, known for its mountain gorillas and volcanoes, but also full of foreign and local armed groups.
