Japanese architect Kazuyo Sejima of the renowned firm SANAA has submitted sketches for a new design and events center for the city of Puyuan in China, located on an island. On February 6, the Designboom portal writes about this.
The project, which is located on a small island in the city’s river, proposes to surround the entire island with a glass dome. The result is a complex “architectural” landscape in which the boundaries between the built and natural environment are blurred.
Kazuyo Sejima’s concept for the Puyuan Event and Design Center is to cover the entire island with glass, including the existing temple on the island. With a length of 150 m and a height of 30 m, the resulting design and event center resemble a boat floating on a river.
The design includes a full-scale dome that lacks any large structural beams or columns. The entire ceiling is a rigid grid of stainless steel tubes with an average diameter of no more than 30 mm.
