An earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred at 4:17 am (1:17 am in Lisbon) 33 kilometers from the provincial capital of Gaziantep, in southeastern Turkey, on the border with Syria, with a source at a depth of 17.9 kilometers.
The morning earthquake, followed by several aftershocks, killed more than 1,300 people in both countries.
