Mozambican police have arrested four municipal council employees in the southern Mozambique city of Maputo on suspicion of falsifying deposit receipts in applications for building permits, the National Criminal Investigation Service (Sernik) said on Monday.
“These individuals stole several pages from the parish books for the issuance of construction permits for works at the district level of the city of Maputo, and also falsified deposit receipts with reference to payments for the same requests,” said Hilario Lole. The men, aged between 33 and 45, are accused of aggravated theft, abuse of power or position, criminal association and forgery, the spokesman said, adding that the employees are also suspected of falsifying deposit slips for use permit requests. and benefit from the land.
According to Sernik, suspicions arose during an audit carried out by the Maputo municipality, during which “certain anomalies were identified in the financial department, registration and other sectors of the granting of the right to use and benefit from land and construction permits.”
“Among these [detidos] there is one person who is identified as having held a certain leadership and management position,” the spokesman added, without focusing on the losses of the Maputo municipality.
Sernic’s spokesman said the investigation, in consultation with the Maputo municipality, was still ongoing and it was suspected that other employees were involved.
