The Australian Electoral Commission has declared that it is legally impossible to prohibit the use of AI-generated audio and video materials in the election campaign, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported on May 21.
Australian Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers says Australia’s electoral laws do not currently prohibit fake political news. “If these messages were authorized, properly authorized, they do not violate electoral law at this time.”“He said at a meeting of the relevant committee of the Australian Senate.
Australia’s CEC can take action if misinformation about the electoral process is spread, but has limited powers over actual political material.
Rogers noted that generative artificial intelligence, with the help of which convincing audiovisual fakes are created, is becoming an increasingly pressing issue in elections in the country and in the world. “The pace of this process is accelerating, especially as our understanding of this technology increases.”he emphasized.
