Russia accuses the US of wanting to place weapons in space

Russia on Tuesday accused the United States of intending to place weapons in space, a day after the UN Security Council rejected a Russian draft resolution on the issue.

The United States has also made similar accusations against Russia, condemning last week’s launch of a Russian satellite with military capabilities.

For Moscow, the refusal of Washington and its allies to the draft resolution demonstrates that the US goal is to “take weapons into space,” said Russian diplomatic spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

According to the French agency AFP, the spokeswoman accused Washington of intending to turn space “into an arena of military confrontations.”

Monday’s vote ended in a seven-vote tie, with US allies voting against and Russia’s supporters voting in favor, with Switzerland abstaining.

The resolution was therefore rejected because it did not receive the required nine votes.

In April, the same thing already happened with a similar proposal from Washington and Tokyo to ban weapons of mass destruction in space.

In 1967, the Soviet Union, the United States and Great Britain signed a treaty declaring outer space a public domain to be used only for peaceful purposes.

Currently, about a dozen countries have the ability to launch spacecraft and about 80 have their own satellites, as well as private companies.
