Doctors Without Borders (MSF) teams describe the humanitarian situation resulting from the floods in Rio Grande do Sul as catastrophic, with more than 150 people killed and nearly 100 missing.
“The situation is catastrophic. When we arrived and toured the region by helicopter, we were able to see the cities from above and noticed that in some cases we could not even see the roofs of houses. kilometers, and all there is is water,” describes MSF medical coordinator Rachel Soeiro in a statement released today by the non-governmental organization.
Heavy rains and floods hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul, isolating and forcing the evacuation of entire towns, with roads destroyed, bridges destroyed and the capital Porto Alegre’s main airport closed indefinitely.
