In the Astrakhan region, a criminal case was opened for organizing extremist activities against a convicted local resident who participated in the organization and financing of the banned movement “Prisoner Criminal Unit” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation), reported The press service of the Investigative Committee of the region reported on May 22.
According to the investigation, the Astrakhan resident, who had previously been repeatedly convicted and was serving time in correctional colony No. 8, since January 2022 assumed a leading role in the criminal hierarchy and received the status of “prisoner.”
From 2022 to 2024 he organized the extremist movement “Criminal Prisoner Unit” (an organization whose activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation) within the colony and participated in its financing. As part of his activities, he also organized the delivery of prohibited items and regularly collected money.
The investigating authorities also opened a case against the head of the IK-8 operational department for abuse of power. He is accused of failing to carry out the necessary operational search activities against the convicted person, facilitating access to mobile communications and other prohibited items, as well as warning about upcoming searches.
The investigation of the case continues under several articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, including the organization of extremist activities, their financing, occupation of a high position in the criminal hierarchy and abuse of official powers.
