A meeting of the district commission to regulate the production of anadromous fish species was held in Anadyr on May 23, the Chukotka news agency reports.
The commission has tightened the fishing calendar for red fish. Now in the Anadyr estuary it will be possible to fish only two days a week, the remaining days will be passing days.
Forecasts for Pacific salmon production in Chukotka this year are worse than usual. If in past seasons the district quota was about 3.5 thousand tons, this year the quota was reduced to 879.3 tons of salmon. For the Chukchi coastal zone, the quota was set at 557.2 tons of fish.
According to the head of the fisheries committee of the district department of agriculture and food, Alena Skryabikova, about 1 million fish are needed to optimally fill the chum salmon spawning grounds in the Anadyr estuary basin. But this season the number of chum salmon is expected to decrease to 467 thousand individuals, which is extremely insufficient to restore the population.
Today, the fishing industry and hobby organizations are preparing a package of applications for fishing. After May 30, the commission will distribute quotas between industrialists and hobbyists.
