China began military maneuvers “around” Taiwan this Thursday, three days after the inauguration of the island’s new president, William Lai Ching-te, the official Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.
“The exercises are taking place in the Taiwan Strait in the north, south and east of the island of Taiwan, as well as in areas around the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin,” Xinhua said.
The agency added that the exercise, which will last two days, began at 7:45 a.m. (11:45 p.m. Wednesday in Lisbon).
Taiwan regrets China’s provocative military behavior
Taiwan condemned China’s military maneuvers around the island, calling them provocative behavior.
“It is regrettable to see China adopting unilateral and provocative military behavior that threatens Taiwan’s democracy and freedom, as well as regional peace and stability,” Karen Guo, a spokeswoman for Taiwan’s president, said in a statement.
“In the face of external challenges and threats, we will continue to defend democracy,” he emphasized.
