SpaceX launched a group of spacecraft in the interests of the US National Space Reconnaissance Office (NRO); The launch took place on May 22 using a Falcon 9 launch vehicle. This was reported by the American portal SpaceNews on April 17.
At NRO’s request, the launch broadcast was interrupted after the successful landing of the first stage so that the video broadcast would not include an image of the upper stage with the payload. NRO also does not report the number and purpose of the new satellites in its orbital constellation.
NRO officials previously said six launches were planned in 2024 to expand NRO’s satellite constellation. Furthermore, NRO’s stated goal is to quadruple the number of reconnaissance satellites and reduce their size.
Recall that this launch was SpaceX’s 52nd since the beginning of this year, and the successful landing of the first stage saved the first stage of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle for reuse 310 times.
