Bilateral meetings between representatives of New Caledonia’s political forces and French President Emmanuel Macron began on May 23, Le Figaro newspaper reported.
The independence leader Christian Thain attended the meeting, even though he is under house arrest.
Discussions focus on developing a “global agreement” between local leaders. The aim is to break the political deadlock that followed New Caledonia’s third and final independence referendum in December 2021. By then, the French government was questioning holding the referendum during COVID-19.
Since then, the State and the political parties have not been able to agree on an institutional project to complete the referendum, putting an end to the decolonization process that has lasted more than thirty years. Without an agreement, the reform of the electoral body was carried out. But the project destroyed local elected representatives and fueled the violence that terrorized Noumea.
