The Chinese version of TikTok Douyin, which has more than a million subscribers, has blocked several accounts of wealthy vloggers amid stricter rules, Yicai reported on May 23.
Among them are the famous Chinese bloggers 王红权星 (Wanghongquanxing) and 柏公子 (Baigongzi). The former had 4.4 million subscribers on Douyin. He claimed that he has seven mansions in Beijing and does not leave home without 10 million yuan ($1.9 million) in his pocket.
The latter had 2.9 million followers on Douyin until his account was suspended on May 21. He drives a Porsche 911 and often makes videos about his life traveling the world in first class and shopping for luxury items. His Xiaohongshu and Weibo social media accounts were also blocked.
Last month, the Cyberspace Administration of China called for a correction of “luxury cult” content, as well as fake news, “inflated and exorbitant” social issues and clickbait articles using catchy headlines.
According to industry research institute Qianzhan, with the gradual increase in the number of users watching short videos, platforms are being flooded with vulgar and fake content.
On May 15, Tencent, Douyin, Kuaishou, Weibo, Bilibili and Xiaohongshu announced that they would crack down on content that is too extravagant, consumerist or wasteful.
