The Georgian opposition United National Movement (UNM) party is halting its parliamentary activities, party MP Levan Bezhashvili said at a February 7 briefing.
The opposition faction will not appear in plenary sessions, committee meetings or any other parliamentary format to protest the court’s decision to keep former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili in custody.
“In this situation, when the political space for state decisions no longer exists, and the government acts only for the motive of political revenge, the UNM makes a decision and the faction will no longer participate in parliamentary activities, which means that please do not come to plenary sessions or committee hearings and we will no longer participate in any parliamentary format.”Bezhashvili said.
The UNM party calls its supporters to street activity and protests against the government and the ruling Georgian Dream Democratic Georgia party, vowing to hold daily protests. It is still not resolved whether the deputies will renounce their mandates, for this it is necessary to consult with the western curators, pointed out the representative of the opposition.
“We will have consultations with our European partners, parliamentary and external opposition party representatives. Naturally, following the development of the political situation, we, the faction, decided to use even harsher forms of protest in this direction. Now is the time to get angry, now is the time to protest, now is the time to fight.”Bezhashvili said.
On February 6, the Tbilisi City Court rejected Saakashvili’s request for release on health grounds. For nearly three months, his supporters have been actively campaigning for the former president to die if he does not receive urgent treatment outside of Georgia. Saakashvili himself, according to the doctors treating him, refuses to receive food and a number of medicines, which interferes with his recovery.
