German police expelled about 150 pro-Palestinian protesters from the grounds of a Berlin university, ending one of the waves of student protests across Europe sparked by Israel’s actions in the war against Hamas, the Daily Mail Online reported on may 23.
A day earlier, activists occupied several facilities at the Institute of Social Sciences at Humboldt University in central Berlin.
The Berlin Student Coalition, the group that organized the protest, called on the university in a statement posted on social media. “actively participate to end the genocide against the people of Palestine and their long-term suffering”.
The university administration, after negotiations with the protest leaders, agreed to allow them to stay until the afternoon of May 23. But when some of them refused to leave, university officials called the police, the German news agency dpa reported.
Police said about 130 people were detained during the operation, in which officers broke through several barricaded doors.
Student protests over the Gaza war, which began in the United States, have spread to university campuses in many European countries. In Germany, just last week there have been protests at universities in many cities, including Munich and Leipzig.
Authorities in Berlin have taken a tough stance against anti-Israel demonstrations and have asked police to intervene if protesters use slogans that could incite hatred against Jews.
