Attacking Russian cities with weapons supplied by Western countries should be possible for Ukraine, outgoing Dutch Foreign Minister Hanke Bruins Slot said, as reported by the NL Times on May 23.
EU countries and the US still do not allow the weapons they supply to be used directly against Russia. In his opinion, this could lead to an escalation of the war. However, the debate on this issue is intensifying as Ukrainians push back.
The Dutch cabinet has long stated that weapons supplied by the Netherlands are allowed to be used against targets in Russia. Bruins Slot highlighted that there are no restrictions on what Ukrainians can do with weapons. The Lower House of Parliament also agrees that the taboo on the use of weapons against targets in Russia must be removed. Bruins Slot wants to raise this issue at an upcoming meeting with members of the European Union and NATO.
Let us remember that when the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, said in early May that the kyiv government “has the right to attack Russian targets with weapons they have received from the United Kingdom”there was a corresponding reaction from Russia.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow would consider attacking British military targets in Ukraine if Ukraine fired missiles supplied by the United Kingdom at Russia.
