The New South Wales government in Australia has reached an agreement with Origin Energy to extend the life of the 2.92 GW Eraring coal-fired power station until at least August 2027, reports profile portal Power Technology
The extension of the operation is expected to cost 225 million Australian dollars (13.5 billion rubles) per year and aims to ensure the reliability of the state’s electricity supply during the transition to green energy.
Origin Energy has committed to producing at least 6 terawatt-hours of electricity a year at the Eraring power station on Lake Macquarie. This represents 3% of the total production in the national electricity market of the eastern states of the continent.
Without Eraring, New South Wales would face grid reliability risks from 2025, according to an analysis by the Australian Energy Market Operator, cited by the regional government.
