J. Mayer H. Architects won the competition to design the water-inspired “Cheondam Tower” in Seoul, South Korea. ArchDaily magazine writes about this on May 23.
The project was the winner of the Seoul City Urban Planning and Innovative Architectural Design Project Competition, initiated by Seoul authorities with the aim of improving the quality of the urban environment and the quality of life of residents. Chosen from numerous applications and six shortlisted projects, Cheongdam Tower emerged as the winner.
The name “Cheongdam” means “clear water” and represents purity and natural habitat. Inspired by the natural flow of water, the project design features organic movement and symbolizes the natural cycles necessary for growth and culture.
Thanks to soft and organic lines, green terraces and a protective façade that imitates water waves, the structure is “a living, breathing organism in the urban landscape”.
The tower has winding paths through open green spaces with ponds. In addition, the itineraries include cultural spaces and commercial areas that are integrated into the scheme. Offering views of the city and the Han River, these trails create new public spaces that serve as oases of tranquility in the busy city.
The tower aims to become the center of Korean fashion and K culture (Korean culture) in Seoul, showcasing a modern lifestyle that combines nature, culture and a high standard of living. Furthermore, it is designed as a landmark of Seoul that will attract international attention.
Recently, UNStudio presented the “Wheels of the World” project in Seoul. Likewise, Herzog & de Meuron have just presented designs for the Seoripul Open Art Repository, a collective archive space that will serve Seoul’s three renowned museums.
