A meeting of the commission to regulate the production of anadromous fish species was held in the Government of the Magadan Region, according to the press service of the Government of the Magadan Region on May 24.
Government members considered quotas for salmon fishing for the indigenous peoples of the North (INN), as well as fishing for Asian smelt salmon and sockeye salmon in Shelikhov Bay in the Sea of Okhotsk.
The government commission decided to allocate salmon fishing quotas for indigenous peoples in the amount of 100 kg per person, and for reindeer herders – 250 kg per person. The total permitted volume of salmon production for indigenous peoples this season was 393.2 tons.
The salmon fishing season for indigenous peoples will begin on June 28 and will extend until September 16, 2024.
According to scientists, the smelt population in Tauiskaya Bay is under excessive fishing pressure. In this sense, the allowed catch of Asian smelt this season was only 90 tons.
Recall that in Chukotka, neighboring the Magadan region, salmon production has decreased for the second year, while in Kamchatka the 2023 production produced record results: 490.5 thousand tons of salmon.
