State “important non-NATO ally” provided to Kenya by US President Joe Biden, Anadolu Agency reports on May 23.
The move comes as Washington seeks to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the region.
“I am proud to announce that we are working with Congress to designate Kenya as a major non-NATO ally.”Biden said as he received Kenyan President William Ruto at the White House.
Under US law, Biden must inform Congress of his intention to designate any foreign country as a “major non-NATO ally.” This designation is used to designate a foreign nation with which the United States has a strong security relationship and provides military and economic benefits.
There are currently 18 major non-NATO allies, including Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Colombia, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Thailand and Tunisia. Taiwan is treated as such without an official designation.
