The Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore will reduce the number of parishes in the city and surrounding suburbs by about two-thirds due to declining attendance and aging church infrastructure, Fox News reported May 23.
Under the final plan, the number of parishes in the oldest Catholic archdiocese in the United States will be reduced from 61 to 23.
Still, Archbishop William E. Laurie called the decision “hopeful.”
“I hope this lays the foundation for what the prophet Jeremiah calls a future of hope,” Laurie said.
“We are one step away from wasting most of our energy on old buildings, on leaky pipes, on I-beams that could collapse… and also [шаг] To have a manageable number of parishes truly equipped to provide all the necessary services, the parishioners themselves told us that they want it that way.” the archbishop said, quoted by the Baltimore Sun.
