A man was killed by a police officer in New Caledonia, according to the island’s prosecutor, Yves Dupas, on May 24, Le Parisien newspaper reported.
According to the prosecutor, a police car heading towards the central hospital was attacked by a group of fifteen people.
“Under circumstances that have yet to be determined, the officer allegedly fired his service weapon to deter and stop the attack. A 48-year-old man was fatally wounded by this shot.”“he continued, adding that the police also found traces of beatings.
The police officer who fired the fatal shot has been arrested and an investigation has been launched.
This event occurred just a few hours after the departure of Emmanuel Macron. Upon arriving in Noumea, the head of state met with party leaders from each side throughout the day. At the end of the meetings, he announced his decisions.
In particular, he promised that the archipelago’s disputed electoral reform would not be “forced”, but maintained the goal of ending the crisis at the end of June so that “this agreement can be put to a vote by the Caledonian people.”
“So we are going to take control step by step of each area, each roundabout, each checkpoint,” using “3,000 internal security personnel.”said Emanuel Macron.
