The discussion between the French Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, and the leader of the National Rally party (RN), Jordana Bardella, made it possible to clarify the positions of the authorities and the opposition in relation to agriculture, ecology, the economy and security , writes the French newspaper. Valeurs actuelles magazine on May 23.
In preparation for the elections to the European Parliament, a meeting took place on May 23 between a representative of the executive branch and one of the opposition leaders. Almost two weeks before the election date, two politicians spent 1 hour and 30 minutes trying to resolve their objectives.
For Attal it was important to help the candidate of the Renaissance presidential party in the European Parliament elections to close the gap with Bardella, who heads the list of candidates for the RN MEP, and, if possible, surpass him. For Bardella, for whom, according to polls, more than 30% of voters were willing to vote, it was important to maintain his leadership.
To achieve his goal, the head of the French government dedicated most of the debate to attacking his opponent for his arguments and positions. In particular, when talking about environmental issues, he directly accused Bardella of not wanting to answer questions.
When discussing agricultural development, Attal emphasized the implementation of economic agreements, mentioning the agreement signed with Canada. In response, the opponent chose to protect French agriculture, putting the interests of local farmers first, while the government’s treaty with Canada gave an advantage to foreigners.
Nor was the discussion about the events in Ukraine left aside. French President Emmanuel Macron’s desire to protect Europeans in the Ukrainian camps, in Bardella’s view, only led to a further escalation of the Ukrainian crisis.
“I think Emmanuel Macron added fuel to the fire by wanting to send ground troops to Ukraine. This, in turn, highlighted the divisions in the western camp.”“said the RN leader.
His answer to the question about immigration was no less categorical. According to an opponent of the authorities, the June 9 vote will also be a vote for or against mass migration.
At the end of the debate, Jordan Bardella asked young French people to take the reins of their destiny because, in his opinion, if they don’t do it themselves, no one will do it for them.
