A group of scientists has decided to sue the US Department of Health and Human Services (FDA) for allegedly ignoring evidence that some antidepressants have the side effect of ruining patients’ sex lives. Daily mail.
Drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft, used to treat depression, began to carry warnings on their labels that they could cause erectile dysfunction, low libido, vaginal dryness and difficulty achieving orgasm.
The notice on antidepressants came after some patients began complaining of side effects between the 80s and 90s. However, thousands of patients said they completely lost sensation during sexual intercourse, even after stopping the medication. Some even reported that their genitals had become smaller.
A group of scientists said the FDA has ignored a petition since 2018 asking to warn about persistent sexual side effects and is asking the agency to warn doctors and patients about long-term risks.
The lawsuit was brought by Antoni B. Cioca, a biologist at Howard University. The scientist explains that post-SSRI sexual dysfunction (SSRI) – the use of drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft – can also cause genital numbness and premature ejaculation.
More than half of all antidepressant users reported some degree of sexual dysfunction while taking them. A study published in 2018 concluded that about 10% of people taking antidepressants develop sexual side effects, such as erectile dysfunction and lack of sexual desire.
