A new landmark has been added to Bangkok’s architectural landscape: an aluminum grotto and public area designed by HAS Design and Research. Designboom magazine writes about this on May 24.
The recently completed project, which marks the 90th anniversary of the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (ASA), features an innovative design designed to encourage public participation and learning.
The project, initiated by Thailand’s leading aluminum company, S-ONE Group, and KIN, had the unique challenge of creating a pavilion that would celebrate Thailand’s position as a leader in metals production in Southeast Asia, while also time will create a much-needed public hearing. Space for relaxation on the 90th anniversary of the ASA Arquitecto Expo.
As a result of this project, HAS design and research founders Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee prioritize accessibility and create a free, nonprofit hub for public learning, artistic exchanges, and educational conferences.
Given Bangkok’s high population density and limited green space (which currently does not meet the WHO guidelines of 6.99 square meters per capita), design and research experts developed a layout that would offer the much-desired privacy. need out of town.
The solution was the “Aluminum Grotto,” a sculptural, cave-like structure that evokes the natural world in an animated display. With this project, the architects pay tribute to Thailand’s past, where houses were often hidden in natural landscapes.
The raised structure creates a shaded space below, a “gray area” that functions similarly to the “Tai Tung” space found in traditional Thai stilt houses. Additionally, during special events, natural light filtering through the grotto-like structure creates an almost festive atmosphere, offering a unique experience during educational forums and conferences.
