Western countries are increasingly using undersea cables to collect intelligence, China’s Ministry of State Security said, the Global Times newspaper wrote on May 24.
As the department noted, undersea cables in recent years have become for some Western countries an object of theft of intelligence information and, ultimately, the realization of geopolitical interests.
As an example, MGB officials cited data disclosed by former US National Security Agency employee Edward Snowden, according to which Washington has been implementing the Upstream program for decades, which involves the illegal collection of intelligence data from submarine cables.
The MGB said that in the face of a real threat from foreign intelligence services, Chinese state security agencies will closely monitor and legally combat penetration, sabotage and espionage by foreign forces on China’s critical underwater infrastructure.
