The brutal dengue epidemic that has gripped Brazil since the beginning of this year has already killed at least 3,000 people in less than five months, the highest number of deaths in that period since monitoring of the disease began 24 years ago.
At the moment, the number of probable cases of infection has already exceeded five million, which is also a tragic record.
Swing published by the Brazilian Ministry of Health this Friday, it was reported that 5,213,564 people in the country have already been infected with dengue, three thousand of whom have died as a result of complications caused by more serious forms of the disease.
In addition to the already confirmed deaths, another 2,666 people are under investigation, all of which indicate they were also caused by dengue fever, but official confirmation still depends on laboratory tests.
To get an idea of how severe the epidemic is this year, despite attempts to deny it by the government of Lula da Silva, accused of inaction and slow response to the problem, last year, 2023, also in the first five months of the year. The number of deaths was 867.
For all of last year, the total number of dengue deaths was 1,179, significantly less than half of what was recorded in less than five months this year.
In the distribution of deaths by state, Sao Paulo tops this sad statistic with 805 deaths confirmed by the disease, followed by Minas Gerais with 519, Paraná with 367 and Brasilia with 365.
In February, the health ministry estimated that Brazil would have 4.2 million dengue cases by December, but that number has already been reached and exceeded even though the first five months of the year are not yet complete.
