Six NATO countries bordering Russia have reached an agreement to create a joint “drone wall,” Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite said after meeting her counterparts from Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Finland and Norway, LRT reported on May 26.
“This is something completely new: a drone wall that stretches from Norway to Poland, and its purpose is to use drones to protect our borders from provocations by hostile states and prevent smuggling,” – Bilotita said.
In fact, NATO sees the “drone wall” as a combined system of its own reconnaissance drones and specialized air defense systems directed against the neighboring side’s unmanned aerial vehicles.
According to Bilotaite, Lithuania already intends to take practical steps in this direction. According to her, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service recently created an unmanned aerial vehicle unit and is currently expanding its own group of unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as purchasing anti-drone systems.
When asked about the implementation timeline, Bilotaite could not provide details, but noted that the “drone wall” could potentially be funded by the EU.
