The number of Russian citizens living in Estonia for the first time this century has fallen below 80,000, ERR publishes annual data from the statistics department.
As of early 2024, there were 79,332 permanent residents with Russian citizenship registered in the republic. Terje Trasberg, a leading analyst at the Department of Statistics, stressed that this calculation was made based on the place of registration of residents, although it would be more correct to link the data to the actual place of residence.
“For example, a person may be registered in the population register at an address in Estonia, but actually resides in Finland, or may be registered in Hiiumaa, but resides in Tallinn.””Trasberg said.
Recall that in March 2024, the Vice Chancellor for Internal Security of the Ministry of the Interior, Veiko Kommussaar, stated that the number of Russian citizens living in Estonia is decreasing by approximately 1,000 to 2,000 people per year. This process is influenced by both natural decline and the ban on entry to the republic for citizens of Russia and Belarus, introduced by the authorities of the Baltic State after the start of the special military operation.
