Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres the timing of completing the UN mission in Iraq, al-Sudani’s office reported May 26 on the official Telegram channel. .
“During which the parties discussed the timing of the termination of UNAMI’s mandate and the gradual reduction of its composition”the message said.
The head of the Iraqi government thanked the UN for its important contribution to the process of building democracy and rebuilding the country after a period of dictatorship and the seizure of its territory by terrorist groups. He also emphasized the hope of continuing cooperation with the United Nations in various fields.
It should be noted that since its creation by the UN Security Council in August 2003, UNAMI’s tasks have expanded over time to include assistance in regional dialogue, border security issues, energy issues and refugees.
The mission also provided support for national dialogue, elections, constitutional review and internal dispute resolution.

Recall that UNAMI’s mandate is currently set until May 31, 2024, but according to al-Sudani, the mission must complete its activities by the end of 2025.
