The anti-Georgian rhetoric that American officials have been using lately is at odds with the will of the American people, Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili told reporters on May 26.
“The American people greatly appreciate the support of the Georgian people, the support of our soldiers in Afghanistan, when we support American soldiers. Therefore, such anti-Georgian rhetoric is at odds with the will of the American people.”– he said.
Papuashvili expressed hope that Washington’s policy corresponds to the will of the American people. He also described as unacceptable the blackmail in the form of sanctions that threaten representatives of the Georgian leadership if the law on foreign agents is passed.
The head of Parliament also described as unacceptable the way in which the American side dialogues with the Georgian side. He noted that this is not how strategic partners communicate.
Recall that the previous US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that the State Department would introduce restrictions on the acquisition of American persons in relation to Georgian officials declared responsible for “undermining democracy”and members of their families. The department is also launching a review of bilateral cooperation between Washington and Tbilisi.
The US and EU criticize Georgian authorities for their decision to adopt a law on foreign agents. They accuse Tbilisi of acting against the Georgian people.
