The Russian Defense Ministry expressed its readiness to provide all necessary assistance to Armenia in connection with flooding caused by heavy rains. The corresponding statement was published on May 26 by the department’s press service.
“In connection with the emergency situation that arose in the Republic of Armenia due to heavy downpours and storms, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation is ready to provide assistance in eliminating the consequences of floods and mudflows”says the message.
The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that the command of the 102nd Russian military base, with garrisons in Gyumri and Yerevan, is ready to allocate personnel and the necessary equipment to help people and eliminate the consequences of violence from the elements.
It should be noted that, at the request of the Armenian side, the forces and means of the Russian Armed Forces will be immediately sent to the disaster zones.
Recall that the 102nd military base of the Russian Armed Forces operates in Armenia on the basis of an interstate agreement signed in 1995. The base has two garrisons: in the city of Gyumri and in Yerevan. The personnel of the military unit is about 4 thousand people. The base has S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, MiG-29 fighter jets and Mi helicopters. Military base 102 is the guarantor of security in the region.
We also note that a significant part of the Russian military contingent in Armenia are citizens of Armenia participating in the protection of the state border with Iran and Turkey.
