CDU and BE near the Parliament of Madeira

The Unitary Democratic Coalition (CDU-PCP/Greens) and the Left Bloc (BE) failed to elect deputies this Sunday in the early regional elections in Madeira, resulting in their expulsion from the Madeira Legislative Assembly, according to preliminary results.

This is the third time that the CDU and BE have failed to appear in the Madeira parliament.

According to the official preliminary results of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of the Interior, the CDU received 1.63% of the votes (2,217) and became the eighth largest political force out of the 14 participating in the elections.

BE follows with 1.41% and 1912 votes.

The CDU has participated in regional legislative elections since 1976 and failed to elect deputies either that year, in 1988, or now.

At the last election, in September 2023, one was elected.

In turn, BE, active since 2004, was left without a representative in the Madeira Parliament in 2011 and 2019.

After the departure of these two forces, representatives of seven political parties remained in the Madeira Legislative Assembly: PSD, PS, JPP, Chega, CDS-PP, IL and PAN.

This Sunday’s elections were won by the PSD, which received 36.13% of the votes (49,103) and elected 19 deputies, falling short of the target of 24 to achieve an absolute majority.
